The "West Highland Line" route was featured in the Harry Potter films as the setting for the Hogwarts Express - most notably the viaduct at Glenfinnan.

This video marks my first time outside of the United States, and special thanks goes to Dayna Jodzio for driving on the "wrong" side of the road to get to these beautiful locations!
If you are interested in taking the trip yourself (which I would highly recommend) visit:

The Callanish Stones (or "Callanish I", Clachan Chalanais or Tursachan Chalanais in Scottish Gaelic) are an arrangement of standing stones placed in a cruciform pattern with a central stone circle. They were erected in the late Neolithic era, and were a focus for ritual activity during the Bronze Age.

The Callanish Stones are situated on a low ridge above the waters of Loch Roag with the hills of Great Bernera as a backdrop. Numerous other ritual sites lie within a few kilometres. These include at least three other circles, several arcs, alignments and single stones; many visible from the main site. The most impressive – Callanish II and Callanish III – lie just over a kilometre southeast of the main Callanish Stones, and originally consisted of circles of stones at least eight in number. The existence of other monuments in the area implies that Callanish was an active focus for prehistoric religious activity for at least 1500 years.

The Standing Stones of Challanish (Calanais or Chalanais in Gaelic) are described as a testament to the skills and determination of the people who lived in the area more than four thousand years ago. 'Construction of the site took place between 2900 and 2600 BC' says Wikipedia 'though there were possibly earlier buildings before 3000 BC. A tomb was later built into the site. Debris from the destruction of the tomb suggests the site was out of use between 2000 BC and 1700 BC. The 13 primary stones form a circle about 13 m in diameter, with a long approach avenue of stones to the north, and shorter stone rows to the east, south, and west (possibly incomplete avenues). The overall layout of the monument recalls a distorted Celtic cross. The individual stones vary from around 1 m to 5 m in height, with an average of 4 m, and are of the local Lewisian gneiss. Local tradition says that giants who lived on the island refused to be converted to Christianity by Saint Kieran and were turned into stone as a punishment. Another local belief says that at sunrise on midsummer morning, the "shining one" walked along the stone avenue, "his arrival heralded by the cuckoo's call." This legend could be a folk memory recalling the astronomical significance of the stones.

In 1984, Ultravox used an image of the stones on the cover of their album Lament. In 1988, Jon Mark released a CD, The Standing Stones of Callanish, intended to evoke Britain's Celtic legacy.'

In this vlog, I photograph the hauntingly beautiful and atmospheric Callanish Standing Stones on the Isle of Lewis both on New Year's Eve and also New Year's Day morning during sunrise.

Come and join me as I show you how I managed to shoot during the dark hours of the evening as well as the challenges encountered. I slept on location overnight in my minibus /temporary converted campervan so that I can shoot the gorgeous sunrise too.

I also show a selection of the images that I captured including a full rainbow directly over the stones themselves. Let me know what you think and feel free to leave a comment below and don't forget to SUBSCRIBE if you wish.
