Description

This video is a tribute to all those killed or captured at the Battle of Saint Valery in 1940.
In order to be able to evacuate at Dunkirk the 51st Highland Division were ordered to fight a reaguard action drawing Rommel's troops down to St Valery En Caux where the British forces were to be taken off on the night of June 11th. For various reasons this never took place and many were either killed or captured. Of those who survived many spent the war in various Prisoner of War camps including my father who was in the Royal Norfolks and was attached to the Highland Division. He spent 5 years in Stalag XXA and Stalag XXB. The song which is bitter sweet and in my opinion one of the best British folk songs ever written. The writer was Davy Steele formerly of the Battlefield Band who's father escaped from Dunkirk shortly before but who's uncle was captured at St Valery. On his return from Prisoner of War Camp he left his home country of Scotland for a life in Canada as he felt let down that no one recognised their sacrifices. Now every year there is are memorial services in Saint Valery En Caux to commemorate these unsung heroes. The video contains photos of my father in prisoner of war camp and from this years 70th anniversary. Lest we Forget
